Anyway, you can buy screen cleaning sprays for TFT screens. Alternatively, get a soft cloth and dampen it, make sure it is NOT wet, just damp.
Gently wipe your laptop screen but dont press hard.
This should do the trick but screen cleaning kits are quite cheap and easy to use.

I like the idea of a specialist product, preferably not waterbased. Are all screencleaners much of a muchness or are there extra good or particularly poor ones?

Well my friend bought a really cheap one for about £3 at the local supermarket and that did a pretty good job.
It came with a cleaning fluid in a small spray bottle and it had a sponge with it.

never noticed these at tesco's, just get in, get what i need and get out.
will have a nose around next time.

I have found that even some of the so called 'screen cleaners' leave horrible smear marks on LCD screens.

For dust, a soft bristle brush is great, for other marks I tend to just use a weak washing up liquid and water solution on a soft lint free cloth. Dont press too hard or rub repeatedly in the same area though as you may mark the screen.
