The Chancellor has announced that employees laid off work will get 80% of their earnings, but practically nothing for the self-employed. The problem for the self-employed is that politicians and civil servants only understand 'employment' as someone working 9-5 for a large company or organisation.

They never see or even consider the army of self-employed who fix their boilers, put down their carpets, build their home improvements, plumb-in their new washers, clean their windows, service their cars, trim their hedges, cut their hair, nanny their children etc. These are the people who help society and the economy to keep going.

Furthermore, they are entitled to very little in terms of state benefits; they get no paid holidays; no security of employment; they have to do - or pay to have done - their annual SA tax return; and have to pay entirely for their own private pensions, which have recently been decimated..

The offer of HMRC to defer the July tax payement to next January simply is ridicuous; if they need that money to pay bills now, how are they going to find it by January if there is still no work.?
