Dishwasher Blues

Yesterday, when I went to open our 7 years old ADP8252 Diplomat dishwasher, something snapped, and the now door falls open whereas before it operated like a slow closing toilet lid.
1 Any ideas what might have happened here?
2 A small plastic tool is required to remove the wooden decorative front. Are these freely available?
