Just done a clean of the filter on my dishwasher because my plates/cups have been smelling a bit of the dishwasher tablets we use post-wash. I lifted the cylindrical filter out and a rusty screw fell out of it onto the floor. No idea where it's supposed to go. There must be a reason for it being there in the first place though. Should I worry?

There is also standing water in the 'sump', where the cyllindrical filter usually sits. The water smells like the dishwasher tablets. This is the first time I've cleaned the filter so no idea if this is normal. I read somewhere this is fine, but is this a sign of a problem?

PS. Anything else I should consider trying if cleaning the filter doesn't get rid of the smell? There was some gunk in it but not THAT much.

There is always a bit of water pooled in the sump at the bottom. Perfectly normal.

The screw may have just fallen in from something you put in the washer. There may be a screw or two at the bottom of the sump but these do not usually rust. So I doubt it has come out of the dishwaher internally.

One way of clearing a bit more water out of the dishwasher is to start a cycle with the dishwasher empty, and then do an over-ride reset.

This is normally done by pressing two buttons together on the control panel before starting the cycle.

This usually activates a pump mode and may clear a bit more water from the sump area.

Other than that, buy a dishwaser cleaner and run it empty on a hot cycle and give it a flush through!
