After the dishwasher has run, with salt/soap etc. the dishes have nasty caked on black grit on them. Why????

Are you putting pans in with the dishes ? the metal on some pans reacts with the chemicals in the powder/ tablet causing a black oxide film . try a run with just dishes and see what happens
