Do you have to leave a gap between the oven side and the kitchen unit side
ie: will the heat from the oven effect the kitchen unit#

you don't need to leave a gap as ovens have seals to keep the heat in, most free standing cookers seem to be 500mm wide. its more of a case of what if you decide in the future you wanted a built in oven/hob in which case you should leave a standard gap of 600mm (for an under oven housing)
I would replace it with a new oven with a recessed hob above(a whole cut in the work top) which looks much better, especially when youv'e gone to the bother of fitting a new kitchen.
