Bit of a basic one I Know. I need to re-emulsion my bedroom ceiling with matt. The emulsion that's on there already is gloss. Does it need rubbing down to give a key for the new emulsion, or will it take OK. Worried that the new emulsion won't stick too well to a shiny surface.

Thanks

Water based emulsion will be difficult to put on a glossed ceiling. Better to lightly abrade the ceiling and give it a coat of oil based undercoat. When dry give it a coat of your chosen emulsion.

Dont understand the question, " The EMULSION on there is already GLOSS"

Do you mean the ceiling is painted with Gloss Paint, or that it is painted with Vinyl Silk/Satin Emulsion (Which is shiny)

Thanks for your reply. Perhaps my post was a bit misleading. The ceiling is already emulsioned by previous owner. It's the shiny emulsion, so I suppose it's silk/satin. It's not gloss paint,

Do I still need to rub down and use oil based undercoat. If yes, can anyone recommend a brand of oil undercoat, preferably available from the sheds.

Thanks to all.

A good quality Trade Matt Emulsion would take, on the original Emulsioned Surface, Ive never had trouble in the past, You would need at least two coats I would imagine.
