Do I need to prime MDF before painting ?

Firstly dont use B&Q paint its crap. Use a good quality trade emulsion from Crown, Johnstones, Dulux etc. Most mdf is factory primed so you can go straight on with an u/c, if you're not sure go with a WB primer undercoat times two and finish with top coat

dcdec spot on. If you use an oil based gloss then it will soak in and will need lots of coats. Use a water based primer/undecoat and give a gentle rub down after before applying your chosen top coat
