Do I need to replace my boiler?

Hi,

Last week my boiler stopped working, it had power fine but after turning on the hot water in the thermostat, the boiler would not ignite, the light that normally would have turned on under the flame icon would switch on for a millisecond and nothing would happen. Tried the basic stuff nothing worked and called an engineer. Boiler is 16 years old and knew that sooner or later would call it a day but if it could be fixed easily I had to try, especially given than in these dates the going price to replace the boiler would be much higher due to seasonality.

Guy came home yesterday, said that the flue sealant was gone, water had condensed in the APS and we had to replace the boiler, I asked him if we could not replace the sealant and APS, he said that the boiler was too old and we would not find the pieces but a google search found APS for that boiler. When I told him he said that flues where outdated and could not replace those, made no sense to me because you could replace the sealant but he is the expert, when I asked if we could not change the APS, even knowing that the issue would happen again, but hope that it would last for a few months and replace the whole thing in spring he said no.

Does anyone know if that was a fair assessment or he is pushing for replacing the whole thing because that's where can make the most money?

Thanks,

Seb

If you can obtain the parts easily, then I'd say you don't need to replace the boiler. As above, make and model would help. Also, it's not a DIY job, just in case you had ideas.

It's a Ferroli Modena 80E, as far as I know it was not an issue with leaking fumes but just water condensation, last few days in Dublin were pretty damp so guessing it's that

Never had that problem with a 80 e ,so has he left it off ?
If it’s a flue fault causing issue it’s probably obsolete
If only a seal I would replace the seal and ap switch for now

he switched off the gas and left but said that the only option was replacing the whole thing, I guess in that case best outcome would be contacting somebody else and asking if they'd do the job because I'd heat to replace the whole thing in these dates if there is a more cost-effective approach

It seems the flue seals are possibly available, so like you say, 2nd opinion might be worth it. Maybe explain the situation upfront?
