Hi all, i want to tile up the reminding of a chimmney breast that was left by the old owner of my 1930' s house. I had to remove some blocks of concrete and i have been left with what can be seen in the picture. I had to cover some gaps with bits of timber screw down into the beams. I was planing to put some bricks stones etc to cover the major gaps and cover it up with self leveling compound. My question is, how clean does the area need to be? It has got quite a lot of sand. And is it a good idea to use slc in this particular case or would i be beter of using concrete?thanks

Use sharp sand and cement. Brush and vacuum out all the loose dust, wet the surface. use a piece of wood across the gap to scrape of excess mix. After a couple of hours go back with a metal float and try to get a smooth finish on your wet patch.
