Do the pipes need insulating?

I wanted to find out, as I am insulating the loft at the moment if:

As the boiler is up in the loft, do the pipes that come out from the boiler, have to be insulated with pipe insulation, incase they freeze.

(most of the pipes are 20mm pipes?, the bigger sized pipes)

(most of the pipes are hot pipes when the boiler is running)

Definitely.
All of them. With proper sectional pipe insulation, not that carp felt sleeve rubbish.
The boiler and pipes are outside the insulated envelope of the house, above the loft insulation.
The loft should be very well ventilated, to prevent damp problems.
Anything up there can freeze easily, if we ever get another harsh winter.

the insulation for pipes in the unheated parts of the loft is incredibly thick... the size of your arm or so, not that thin stuff the size of a decent sausage.

Stiff plastic foam, Climaflex or similar, lasts well. Get some tape for joins and corners.
