Does anybody know how to get this showroom light fitting back into the ceiling?

The light in the photo below and the black plastic cylindrical holder, in which it is encased, is dangling from the ceiling, and I don't know how to get the things back into position.

I pulled the black cylinder through the hole (maybe I shouldn't have) to inspect the bulb.

The cylinder has got a spring one one side which i had to flatten to push it back into the other side of the ceiling.

If anyone can give me any ideas as to what I need to do to resolve this, I'd appreciate it.

It's supposed to have a spring on both sides.

Thanks for the tip, I located the other spring, and reattached it. I can't though force the fitting back up into the ceiling with the springs on both side, the long arms will go, but the short arms wont, they sticks out too much, and aren't as flexible.

Do you have any idea as to how you get the thing back up?

The short arms do not go through the hole to start with but after the long arms have gone through the hole, you pull the short arms down and inward which causes the long arms to come down and hold the light up.

Does that make sense?


It's not a very good system and will probably damage the plasterboard.

Do you have any idea as to how you get the thing back up?

That spring appear to be fitted back to front - the short arm should press against the fitting, so it try to push the longer arm downwards. Idea is, you squeeze both long arms up vertically, tight against the fitting, insert through the hole, at which the springs should pull the fitting tight up against the ceiling.

Imagine sticking your arms straight up, to squeeze through a tight hole, then lowering your arms, to push down/raise yourself up..

That is not correct.

The long arms are only forced down (and then held there) when the short arms are forced into the hole.

are these the type where the short part of the spring is trapped by the edge of the hole in the plasterboard?
