Does the shower hose on a bath tap need to have a nut at the end?

Hi, I need a new hose, I have one with the usual fitting you twist by hand, but the old one had a nut on it, is that necessary?

The shape of the end fitting on the hose doesn't matter, provided it's female thread matches the male thread on the taps. Usually 1/2" BSP
