I will soon be knocking a doorway through from the extension to the main house. The wall is a 9” solid wall. My thoughts are that when I have the hole cut and knocked through to just line this with 1/2” wood 9” wide.

Seem logical? Any suggestions on my simplistic take on it?

Yup, get a ready made door lining set that's 32mm. Worst case, get the local woodyard to machine the right width for you.

Pilsbury,
As above, but when I can (if there is space) I double up the thickness of the wood with an extra blocks of wood (on the liner, in the space between liner and wall) where the hinges will be so that the hinge screws will have two thickness of wood to go through.
Hope that makes sense.
