Hi

I am new to the group but need some help.

I have a mains powered doorbell and the transformer appears to have become faulty.

I have located the transformer but it is at the back of the fuse box (I hope to attach some pictures)

If someone can give me an idea on how to remove the transformer from the fuse box as it seems to be attached in someway to the back of the of the fuse box and I can not see a way to get the cover off let alone get to the transformer.

I have turned off the power before going into the box, so just need some help in getting the transformer out of the box.

Thanks in advance

If that really is the doorbell transformer, someone else who is more experienced with them will confirm, I wouldn't even try and take it out if I were you.

If you can find the cables that supply it, and they're long enough, just buy this:

http://www.screwfix.com/p/byron-wall-mounted-door-chime-kit-with-transformer/80778

and wall mount the transformer next to the CU, will be much easier next time it dies.

You do have space for it in your consumer unit but that would require moving all of your breakers across and I can't recommend that any more than I can getting that thing out.

Another choice is to add a spur from the closest socket circuit and feed the new transformer from that

It's not supposed to be there, so who knows how it's been fixed. Might just be wedged in.

2 options:

1) Disconnect all the cables in front of it and move them out of the way so you can see what's going on, and hopefully you'll see how it's fixed.

2) Leave it there - you'll not be installing the replacement where it is.

BTW -
I can not see a way to get the cover off let alone get to the transformer
- there's no point trying to get to the internals of it - you can't replace them.

Thanks for your replies and help.

I did think that it should not be there but this house was built by subcontractors who bid for the work............back in the day.

I will do what has been suggested, this was down the same line as I was thinking and leave the old unit in situ and fit another unit.

As I don't know the VA for the transformer (the ringer is 8 V) so I would assume that the Transformer will be 8v 1 amp but if I get a variable unit I can cover my basis and start low and work up.

Thanks for the 2nd opinion as this is just what I wanted to hear

I've bought a number of Byron wireless doorbells in the past, for various flats and I would not recommend them over a wired bell where it was available, they're gash

you did well to even find it. I would try to remove the cables needed from the transformer to the bell and install a new one in a sensible position. Pretty mush as Ban All has already suggested.
