doubling the depth of roof joists for extra insulation

I have part of my loft boarded for easy access but I need to re-insulate the loft with a greater depth of insulation. I have intended to add another 4 x 2 inch joist on top of the original with some sort of propriety fixings. Can anybody see why this would not be acceptable.

Add them at right angles to your existing. This will help spread any load more effectively. Just use some screws in on the skew.
