Is the installation totally finished or have they got the trimming and sealing still to do?
It's totally finished. A piece of trim was covering the gap.

It may be normal, It may not be normal. An Inch may be a bit extreme but its impossible to say with out pics (inside and out).
Replacement windows have to be made smaller than the aperture to be able to get them in, Otherwise we would have to hack off all the plaster or render to be able to fit them.
