Im planning on installing downlights in my bathroom. I have two ceiling roses in there already which is were id like to put the recessed downlights. However after close inspection it seems that the ceiling roses are screwed into a joist in the attic. This makes cutting a hole for the lights an issue.

I can quite easily cut a hole next to the joist but this means filling the gap in the ceiling where the wires were coming out of into the old rose and also the ceiling is artexed and by moving the lightfitting i'll have a patch of none artexed ceiling that may look odd.

any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

thanks

You either do it or you dont...sorry for being blunt, but you have to decide on what you are trying to achieve.

I would fill in the holes in, its only a little bit of polyfiller.....

Make sure you purchase suitable lights for the bathroom.... ;)

I had this same issue when I installed some downlighters a year or so back. What I did was to use filler, and carefully mimic the artex pattern. You can't notice it unless you stand on the bed and look right at it. No-one else has ever noticed it.

Be careful not to put your lights literally next to the joists, you can get clearance issues plus it probably isn't good to have all that heat right next to it.
