Hi
I have recently moved into a new property and working on several jobs around the place. I had a look at the house and shed drainage yesterday and the shed just drains down the wall at the moment. I discovered the drain cover under various slabs and mud. I am not sure what has been done with the rectangular hopper. It looks like a section has been removed and the drain pipe from the house inserted directly into the hopper. I have only come across the system where the drain pipe sits above the hopper and discharges water from above. I am looking to connect the shed pipe directly to the drain as the shed wall is looking very damp. Does it matter that the drain is a lot lower than the patio?

Certain types of gully allow direct connection of downpipes into the pot, rather than discharging above the grid. It's useful with rainwater when there may be a lot of detritus washed down, e.g. leaves or moss, so the grid doesn't get blocked, but care must be taken to clean the pot out as required, especially if it drains to a soakaway.

Hi Thanks for the useful replies. They had an invasion of ivy that was allowed to go wild into the roof space of the old outhouse so there would have been a lot of muck and leaves coming down. I am in the process of getting shot of it all. Do you think there is an point in cleaning the area up around the drain and either applying some gravel or concrete around the area?

Concrete or strong mortar mix to tidy it up, Gravel not a good idea as the gully may end up full of it. I'd give a the gully pot a clean out whilst your at it, use an old ladle or ideally a wet vac, really would't stick even a gloved hand down it as you never know quite what might be lurking.....
