Hi. I am starting to plan out two small timber retaining walls each about 400 mm high, and 2.4 m long. There will be soil up to the top of the wall. I am wondering about drainage: should I put perforated pipe behind, covered with clean gravel? or would just gravel do? or something else entirely? or maybe drainage isn't even necessary at this height and length.

I wouldn't bother with the land drain pipe but do put about 4-6'' of clean stone behind it. Any rubble you have around can also go in to fill it up.
