A general query that I have been thinking about for a while and one I have been given different opinions on.

I want my CH system (Vaillant ecoTec Plus open-vent boiler) to "come on" as follows as I find these timings work fine for me :

Early morning : heating 1 hour - hot water 1/2 hour

Evening : heating 1 hour - hot water 1/2 hour

What are the "pro's and con's" in terms of cost of gas usage and also in terms of efficiency / speed of achieving heating and water temperature in having the heating and hot water "coming on" together as opposed to separately ?

Many thanks.

I think you are over thinking it...your boiler will modulate its energy use to the demand placed on it...... the load placed on your boiler will vary, did you use any hot water last might , is the tank warm to start with, whats the starting temp for the CH, cold outside, chilly in ?

Its not the efficiency of the boiler its the temperature goal you want to hit and the level preceding conditions. The only way you can control that is by setting the target temps not the length of time to heat.

Thanks for the reply. If all "variables and conditions" were equal, woud central heating engineers recommend having the heating and hot water "coming on" together or separately ?

Errr even if the variables and the preconditions were equal why would that change anything. Your either going to heat 2 bodies of water individually or together... it will take exactly the same amount of energy to do that.

Thanks for confirming that the same amount of energy (gas) is used, no matter whether your heaing and hot water "come on" together or "come on" separately. That is all I wanted to know.
