The Drayton SM2 timer for my boiler is not working properly. The water and central heating controls light up and work fine when activated but the mechanical timer part has stopped working. I've removed it from it's back plate and all connections seem fine. I took the back off the unit itself and found the timer part to be quite hot. Is this normal? I've had the timer for just over a year. It doesn't seem all that long for it to develop a fault considering they are quite expensive to replace. I'd be grateful for any advice

If it is a mechanical timer is there a little motor attached to it? and if there is, do you have anything to test if there is voltage going to the motor.

You can test with a multi- meter as that will tell you

1 Is there power going to the motor.

2. If there is then you can change the setting to see if the motor is faulty by doing a simple resistance test across the motor winding.

If all else fails then you can give the mechanical part a quick squirt of WD 40 or simular and see if that works.

I don't have a multi meter but the bit which I think has the motor in is completely sealed. I tried squirting the moving mechanical dial with wd40 but it made no difference. I resorted to buying a new unit and used the existing back plate and it works fine now. Thanks for the advice though
