Drill bit storage

I’m not sure if this is entirely the correct forum for this, but I figured it would have the widest audience across all trades.

I’m fed up of my drill bits box. I’m currently using a repurposed bosch drill box but it’s difficult to fit all my bits in, and a real pain when I need a small bit as they always sink to the bottom.

What are people on here using to keep all their bits in? If you could provide a picture that would be even better!

I use a pencil case for all the small drill bits and a seperate toolbox for SDS and breaker bits.

Small bits and accessories that don't have their own boxes in zippable pockets, and the rest in the main compartment.

shallow trays are good. Then the little ones can't hide under the big ones (which should be in a different tray)

It lives in my van most of the time, or actually on site if it’s a longer job.

The trouble I’ve had looking for a tool box is by time I’ve found anything big enough to take the long sds bits it’s a massive box with a lot of wasted space

Ok, different storage issue then. In a workshop I'd have them in a block of wood, but that's not a solution for on site work.

You could contact - adhesive one of these into your bit box, and stab the smaller bits into it?

A block of wood for the smaller twist bits with velcro on the back which you can stick on the side of your van, (inside of course). They can be removed and taken on to site in your tool bag/box and replaced afterwards. For the longer/sds type a length of plastic pipe with one end capped permanently and the other end with an end stop suitable to the size of pipe. This can be stored in your van between two Terry Clips so it simply pulls out and pushes back in, as and when.

TIP: When you buy a set of twist bits they usually come with the cutting edge on show. You should store them with the cutting edge in the right sized hole as the shanks tend to get burred in use, making it disfficult to push them back into the slot, ( and sometimes resulting in cuts to fingers trying to make them!).
