So I want to drill some 25mm holes in the top of my desk, to put cables through. The desk is 40mm thick oak. Just wondering what kind of drill bit to buy?

Do I want one of these: http://www.screwfix.com/p/hex-shank-holesaw-arbor-9-5mm/11336 plus one of these: http://www.screwfix.com/p/bosch-cobalt-holesaw-25mm/95168? Presumably that might not cut as deep as 40mm?

Or do I want one of these: http://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-flat-wood-bit-25mm/51375 but I'm not sure if that will fit into my drill… it says "Shank fitment suitable for 6.35mm Hex impact driver"… my drill is one of these: http://www.screwfix.com/p/makita-bhp453sh-18v-1-3ah-li-ion-cordless-combi-drill/58614 which says it has a 13mm keyless chuck...

What are the benefits/drawbacks of these different kinds of drill bits?

I would use the flat (but at moment it seem screwfix site is down, so cannot view your links). The hex shafts will chuck into your drill.
One tip for a neat hole is pilot first, then drill the hole from both sides, if you go straight through from one side, it will rip into wood on exiting.

Fine till you add something with a fixed plug .
Grommets looks better than a hole in your desk.
