Drilling into sandstone

The front windows in our house have sandstone headers and sills.

I need to attach some timbers to the inside to rectify a window fitting bodge.

Can I drill into the sandstone sill, plug and screw timbers to it?

I've some decent (Irwin) masonry bits, a percussion drill and an SDS (heavy though) and don't want to damage (ie crack) the stones.
