HELP. Is there anyone out there can help a damsel in distress.
I have had a dripping overflow forever. my ex stuck his head in and said it seemed ok ( not, cos its still drippin), I had a plumber put a new ball cock and arm on and its still drippin. I read over a v. old blog from 2007 but it went over my head.

AAH, after readin another old blog I wonder if I just need to adjust the ball cock so its lower. not sure how to do that, can someone explain. Is it just a case of loosening the nut, lowering, then tighten back up.

PS should the thermastat valve for the central heating be on or off, as it was off!!!!!!!

Sorry missed your message. Think its the overflow tank, the one thats the highest in the loft, the one with the cold water in.

I dont want to speak too soon, but I think its stopped drippin. If the nice person from Seco is still on line, can you just confirm that I havent turned anythin I shouldnt, like the big red knob thing on the central heating thermostat, sorry for use of technical terms.( was in OFF position) I also turned the tap that is connected to the other tank down a bit because it was on full but the tap said half turn.

have you got as shower or other mixer, where the hot water comes at low pressure from the tank, and the cold comes at high pressure from the water mains?

Especially a mixer with a "joystick" type control?

Is this the big tank or the little tank? Or do you only have one tank?

ERM, I cant say Ive seen a joystick type thing. Its just an electric shower. We did replace it last year though, not sure what you mean . On the other tank thats in the loft there is a tap for the cold outlet which I have turned down

Ah

You say it is the small tank? About two foot by one by one? With a layer of brown sediment at the bottom, I expect? This is the Feed and Expansion tank for the boiler and central heating.

Do you have a Hot Water Cylinder? Is it rather old?

Are you able to get up into the loft and look at things? Is the large cold water tank (which supplies the bath taps) positioned so that the water level in this big tank, is higher than the water level in the small F&E tank?

Do you know where the stop-cock is for the water main coming into the house?

How fast is the water dripping out of the overflow? A pint an hour, or what? Is it getting worse?

No JD, we've already established that the F+E is higher than the CWSC (see the post I've quoted in my last reply), and that it's the F+E that's overflowing, so the coil isn't split...

Yvonne...switching the central heating on could have temporarily solved your problem if it'd drawn some water into your system, however the problem may well return when the heating is switched off again. It could just be that the float valve needs lowering. As you've had a plumber out to it once, get him back as he's not fixed the problem you asked him to. I would suspect that the float simply needs adjusting. Switch the thermostat off again so conditions are the same as when he left

The drippin has still stopped, worried now the water is goin somewhere else, sure its fine. Its only been drippin about 12 months. I should have sorted it myself in the first place. Thanks for your help everyone, I know where to come when I need a bloke now x

so the F&E is the highest, you THINK?

And the highest one has been dripping for a year? despite having a new ballcock fitted by a plumber?

I don't know what a "big red knob thing on the central heating thermostat" is, do you?

I don't know the significance of "On the other tank thats in the loft there is a tap for the cold outlet which I have turned down," do you?
