You know what it's like, somewhere you can hear the faint dripping of water causing a major fear that something is wrong, really wrong? I was in a flat, trying to do some odd jobs, and every so often I could hear this faint, very faint dripping of water, each time I tried to locate it, it either stopped or appeared to be in another area. I checked around the two stack pipes that run vertically through the flat, behind boxing - no not there! I could see no signs of damp so the first few times I heard it, I left it. I know the professionals amongst you would say that is foolish, but I had looked hard .
I've found it, actually it's the passive burglar alarm detector thingies, very close up, it has this very faint ping - I will never have one of those fitted.

like most things some are louder than others, also depends on what / where its mounted

My mum complained of this and I pooh-poohed it!

My high frequency loss means I can hear nothing of these sorts of noises.

I find the more annoying thing with those detectors is when you are trying to sleep in a room with one. I stayed at a mate's house with them, and noticed that every time I rolled over the thing would glow red.

And after you notice it you REALLY notice it!

The red led is to indicate that is has "detected something" it is also used in "walk test" to see does it work.

useless fact: some jewish people have the red led turned off

breezer, what the heck has being jewish got to do with it?

not 100% sure, but jewish people do have it turned off (red led) as far as i know its something to do with their beliefs of not working on the sabeth, for the led to light it is work.

Dont know if you knew this but Jewish people will not on their sabeth (Friday)

drive
cook
turn on / off any electrical device etc, as they are all doing "work"

I have also seen a time switch that turns on /off the lights (seen one for the burglar alarm too)

if you are visiting and are not jewish you can turn the lights on etc.

I kid you not, but when i first heard of it, i did not believe it, but i have now since seen it on several occasions

When we moved house about 7 years ago, we moved from a house on a very busy A road to a house in the middle of nowhere. At first all was blissfully silent at night....... then a buzzing sound, wherever I moved it seemed to move, I opened the windows, the buzzing went outside. The whole village buzzed ? Very strange, after a few months, the buzzing stopped, so I guess either my hearing was stuffed or subsequently has been, or something either fixed itself (unlikely) or something am unaware of as now completely broken  All was well........ until next March when the sheep in the field next door had their lambs, my god they're noisy. Bl**dy countryside. ;)

Some sounds are not particularly directional, it is hard to tell what direction they are coming from.

I have had this happen where I have been lying in bed, all is quiet, then I can hear a high-pitched whine. Look all around the room, can't find it. Look all around the living room, can't find it. Eventually trace it to a dc power supply in the kitchen. It was below the ambient noise when I was up and had other stuff turned on, but as soon as all was quiet, I could hear it.

So, perhaps there was something electrical in your house that you could hear, and now you don't notice it as your brain is filtering it out?

This makes me wonder, do any dog owners notice their dogs staying away from particular rooms or areas of rooms in their house? Could be due to some high-pitched noise we can't hear coming from an electrical device?

Also, squirrels can squeek in ultrasound. Not that relevant, but I think it is interesting. :D

I thought they did, this is one of the things that has been used to stir anti-semitism.

Perhaps you are thinking of muslims? They aren't allowed to make money without work. A muslim friend of mine skims the interest off his bank account and donates it to charity.

Yeah so do I, but in my case that's the wife. My brain learned to block that one out a long time ago. ;)
