Hi

Im after some advice about my dropped kerb application with Birmingham City council.I have just received my quote of just under £1500 which i have to say totally blew me away theres no obstructions just a 10m2 section of grass,my question is they seem to be charging me to replace the 9m2 section of pavement as well (no damage at all) .Is this the norm as all other drives including one done just last year only replaced the grass section on our road? Any advice before i speak to them on monday would be much appreciated Thankyou

You can not drop a kerb without digging up the footpath.

£1500 sounds ok for a 10m stretch.

Where is the grass in all this?

If it is just grass and you drop the kerb then they will have to then pave the area so that you can drive over it.

I'm lost, enlighten me or show a piccie.

I guess that you have a paved pathway near your wall and then a grass verge to the road? If so, then all you need is a hard surface on the grassy bit and the kerb dropped, in which case £5k is far too much. I had that work plus a load of driveway excavation done for £2,600 last year.

Get more quotes, and make sure that your contractor is approved by the council (County Council in my case) to do dropped kerbs.

Who said 5K ?
Round here they will remove any paving, reinforce the area (paving not adequately supported), have to protect any services, and tarmac (paving may crack). All that is not cheap. It may be overkill though.

Lots of other folk just drive over the pavement, but the curbs are very low here.
In theory you can be sued by the council for wrecking the paving by driving over it, but I've never heard of a case.

If the council ever redid our pavement and put those new high sharp curbs in there would be a lot of new wheels and then lots of dropped curb applications. But due to budget restriction etc, they just recoat the roads now, so the curbs get lower each time !

Simon.
