Dye testing of drains?

While digging out foundations for a new extension I find that water is entering the trench from under a previous extension we have.
Its not a great deal, at a guess no more than a fast dripping tap would give but over 48hrs its made quite a lot of water in the trench.

The water looks clean except for an opaque skin and doesn't smell.

Ours is a detached house. Next door is also detached but older having no bathroom when built and has a kitchen and bathroom built on downstairs direct in line with our old extension.

Both properties have completely separate combined sewers to the road.

Without putting anyone to any expense, I would like to find out where the water is coming from.

Seems to me it can only be either a mains water supply pipe leak to next door, cant really see it being mine as my water main is in the other direction.
Or their bathroom/kitchen waste system pipework is leaking into the ground.

How easy is it to use a dye test? I guess you just mix it in a bucket and put it down the suspect drain?
Any tips gladly received.
