I've just received one of these new fangled energy monitors which is actually quite cool.

My query is which cable the clamp should attach to, I have an old style meter (dial) with two thick grey cables coming form underneath, one towards the middle and one to the right (to the left is another black box directly underneath). Neither cable is marked with any tape but common thinking seems to be that the live is furthest right.

The odd thing is that I get the same readings (within 2w) when the clamp is attached to either cable, is it normal to have two lives coming from under the meter?

It does not need to be on the line. It will operate just as well on the neutral cable.

You have 4 cables at the meter, from left to right, L in, N in, N out, Line out. Connect the clamp to the L out but as said it will work on the N out.

Thanks for the quick answers folks, that's brilliant.

I've left it on the one furthest to the right, the manual was quite misleading as it only talks about the live cable rather than it working fine on both live and neutral, not sure why they chose to do that but all's well now :)

It doesn't matter that much as it is reading current, the current in your live (line) should be the same as current in your neutral.
To be pedantic, a neutral conductor is classed as a live conductor too which is why some use the terminology line and neutral. You may also hear the terminology phase and neutral.
