Hi all. I’m in the process of changing a light pendant. Before I take this current one off, is it advisable to get some sheathing for this Earth cable, or will it be okay as it is?

Many thanks

Should really be sleeved.
More importantly, if you are removing/replacing the ceiling rose, make sure you mark that black wire that connects to the brown wire on the existing light fitting; if you mix up the black wires you will have a problem. It's the switched live and should ideally be marked with a brown sleeve or tape, although any method of marking will prevent you having a problem.

Great thanks so much, I was wondering why there were so many black sleeves. I’ve taken pictures of it as it is so I can match up, it I’ll definitely mark up like you recommend!

Does it matter where those red wires connect, as long as they are in any of the three middle connections?

Thanks

Is it safe for me to turn the electrics back on to the house but not use the light switch? The damn earth screw came loose and I can’t find it yet!

yes as the earths are twisted together anyway. you could double up the one of the reds with another and use the screw from that, or one of the screws from the old rose might fit

You need to bring the grey outer sheaths at least upto the plastic base, you can't have it further back and the cores branching and going through separate holes.

Straighten the cores, push the cables through the holes, fix the rose to the ceiling, then push the cables back so the sheath is flush with the inside of the plastic and then dress the cores

Thank you for spotting this, I thought something looked abit tricky. I did have trouble putting that third red cable in which explains this
