I’ve used easifill for similar purposes in the past but it’s gone spectacularly wrong on this occasion.

I was covering a gap where the old back boiler was and did the following:

I then taped the joins and gave it a couple of coats of easifill to blend and smooth out. It was looking good at that stage.

I then came back a day later to this:

Any ideas on what’s caused this and how I can fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Needed to remove loose plaster and paint. You need to get the surface back to solid surface.
Then you need to seal the surface.
Then skim.

I think the damp easyfill has made the unsound surface pickle up.

I did cut out the loose bits of paint with a grinder as I wanted the new plasterboard sheet to be larger than the hole.

How do I seal the surface?

Also, could this have been caused by me painting it before the easifill was fully dry? I may have inadvertently done that.

If the paint is breathable like cheap emulsion. Standard Dulux. Contract matt ect. Those would allow filler to dry though paint ok.
Easyfill don't take some paints very well like durable emulsions so always best to seal.
Stick a summer fan on to speed drying. Air movement is better than heat.

Gardz is good.
Beeline sealer.
Acrylic primer undercoat.
Zinsser 123.
Loads of different products you can use.
Easyfill is more a drywall product and not as good as alternatives. In future buy a box of toupret

I used standard Dulux Matt emulsion.
Presumably, I need to scrape everything off and start again, using the sealer as you have suggested?

If yes, when I scrape it off, can I start again straight away or do I need to wait for surface to dry or PVA before I start?

Much too wet to paint, takes a few days to dry if thicker than a few mm.
