Does anybody know if eco funding is available for DIY external wall insulation?

I have a mid terrace 1900's house that needs it and I've calculated the costs to be around £2500 to DIY it with 100mm polystyrene. [/quote]

I don't know, but I'm as certain as I can be that you won't get funding for DIY - things like that invariably need to be done by registered installers.

All of the various funding schemes exist to make trade bodies and their members richer, and not for the headline purposes they are sold to the taxpayers (or, more usually, the bill payers). They need to get some reward for all their expensive lobbying. It is highly unlikely that you will be able to get any costs awarded for DIY work, even when the work may be to a better standard and much cheaper than through the registered installers.

To open this up:

Has anybody here any experience of installing EWI?

Either as a DIYer, or as a builder-who-is-not-a-specialist-EWI-installer?

I am neither of the above, but I have had a couple of companies round to quote.

I think I will go ahead (after I can remortgage). Even with the ECO funding, it's s fair old whack, especially since ideally our windows should be replaced (they are old and would likely knacker the EWI if changed once EWI installed).

Actually installing it is a doddle by the looks of it. The render on top also seems very straightforward as it's not nearly as fiddly as traditional cement render.

However you will never get money for doing it DIY - what's stopping you just pocketing the money?

Me too.

But also toying with the idea of an extension, hence my Q, as it would probably make logistical sense to have the builder do EWI at the same time, and render everything, that way I make sure that the extension walls line up with the old insulated walls, it all ends up the same colour etc. And I suspect that even without the grant it would work out cheaper than getting an EWI contractor in.

OK, see your issue.

One advantage of using an EWI under the green deal (even if you don't take finance or grant), is the government have made them set the guarantee to the length of the product life (25y instead of 15).

The quote I had was £24k. Defo want a decent guarantee for that. The EWI installers I had round could also just extend the render onto uninsulated parts. They seemed fairly flexible. Can send you the details if you like.

OK, but if a competent builder uses the same proprietary system as a registered installer, and installs it according to the maker's instructions, it ought to be just as good.

That would be handy - contact info in my profile - thanks.

Also (I'd forgotten this), to have EWI means moving the drainpipes and soil stack out from the walls, so again much easier to do at the same time and by the same people who are doing building work which includes adding a WC, adding connections for foul and surface water drainage.

If the materials were paid for once you submit the receipt and one builder regs give a certificate fir the installation (presumably due to the insulation properties of the wall being changed building regs need to be involved?)
