Hello, can anyone help?

I have economy seven to heat my water. All was fine until two weeks ago. The water suddenly became too hot to even touch. Now the water is not even heating up at all. The timer box is still 'ticking' and the light appears when midnight arrives. Could the thermostats (i have two on the lower tank) be broken?

Modern immersion heaters have a thermal cutout that trips if the water overheats.

There is usually a reset button on them, but you still need to address the reason why it tripped. With the recent overheating, it sounds like the thermostat may have failed.

Usually the lower heater is fed from the overnight supply, and the top one is available as a booster at any time. As heat rises, failure of the thermostat in the lower heater may have caused the cutout in the top heater to trip, despite the top heater working correctly.

Please isolate the electricity supply before taking the lid off the immersion to find the cutout.

second that.

sounds like stat failed then tripped the overheat cutout.

fit new stat.

cutout is useally a little pin level with the surface.
if its old it may not have one.

Thankyou!
Im assuming it is fairly straight forward....i had a quote of £180 +vat!
I shall replace the thermostats and let you know how i get on!
