Is there a reason behind this? Does the existing do this? Is it for a water butt?

It's for a CH cistern relocation. The feed ideally needs to come off at a right-angle, clipped to the shelf, and then drop about 0.5m over a 3m run. It's either this or have a short stub from the tank connector going to a compression fitting elbow.

I don't really see why it would be a problem if you can wind the elbow all the way onto the tank connector (and can't just waggle it off again). It really depends on what you mean by a bit loose. They could just be at opposite ends of the manufacturing tolerances, but I believe they're nominally compatible. If it's too sloppy for comfort then try with a different tank connector. Water damage is expensive.
