OK.... I have a cooker switch on the wall that has a socket, I want to change this to just a cooker switch, but I still need a socket... can I run a spur from where the cooker wires in and run a double socket from that ?....would I need to put in a fused switch ? & what type of cable would be best ?

why do you wan't to change it to just a cooker switch? (and good luck funding one in double plate size without a socket)

what is the breaker rating and cable size of this cooker cuircuit?

in practice the answer to your your question is no you cant so give up now.

when spuring off something you have to use the same size cable that is feeding it (unless the protective device has been down rated, but even then its not a good idea)

so as you have a cooker and still using it that means you have to connect another 6mm cable to the incoming side, as well as the one going to the cooker, so that makes 3, 6mm cables in one box(not to mention two connected in the same terminals), you are not going to do it

I am not saying its impossible, just almost imposible, and as you still want a socket i do not see the point of having so much grief

it is on a 40 amp fuse ....the cooker switch is an older type about 7"x8" & I would like to replace this with a smaller one (about the size of a light switch). I still need to use the plug socket, but would like to re-site it a bit lower......I think the cable is about 6mm....

you sid you want to change it to a smaller on, then why dont you, there are much smaller ones available with socket

thank you for your replies.......job is now sorted........got an electrician coming round in a couple of days......DIY........I just love it ..lol

I applaud you for your courage to do this. :D A lot of people would make it personal and give it a go without being certain. Then you run the risk of making a ballsup of it.

I am sure you will pick it up in time.
