We have an existing gas fire which needs replacing and sits in a full brick fireplace. We want to replace this with an electric fire in the same space, the main reason is to remove the room air vent which lets in a lot of cold air and the gas pipes look ugly. Can I install an electric fire in the space of the gas fire and do I need to provide some sort of venting to the chimney, people say you need air bricks to prevent damp in the chimney, but can this be done with installing an electric fire? Any assistance greatly received.

You should be fine just installing it in to the hole, you may need the assistance of an electrician to install the electrical feed.
Remember before purchase to measure the hole size an buy a suitable sized one for that.
Electric fires are not very economic to run and some gas fires are now 89% efficient
