I am buying this electric fire http://www.hotprice.co.uk/flamerite-alto-electric-fire for my living room and I would like your opinion on which effect will look nicer - the log or pebbles. I am looking for what would look the more realistic one in your opinion.

Its an expensive fire, but knowing that it will need to last years and not willing to sacrifice on contemporary design, I figure this one would be a very nice fit.

I contemplated gas fire and even biofuel but realise the electric one will be the most convenient. I can put the flame effect on even when actual heating isn't required.

Another thing - are these fans noisy when heating? I have a normal fan heater and its quite noisy. If it operates on a similar principle, I fear it could be quite noisy.

Thanks for your opinion.

Logs or pebbles, simple answer.

When did you ever see pebbles burning.
I have fitted a few gas fire with ceramic pebbles and they all look stupid.

Of course thereis a noise - it is a fan heater with a fancy case! But some are more noisy than other.

When you put it like that (that it is basically a fan heater in a fancy casing) I am finding it difficult justifying spending near £1000 on it. I may go for something cheaper (around £500 to £650).

This one http://www.hotprice.co.uk/burley-ayston-515-electric-fire supposedly has silent operation as its convectional, but it emits heat from the top which would scupper the idea of putting my TV above it.

Before you purchase, I would telephone Burley and speak to the service manger about any noise. I am not sure about this one, but a convector (ie no fan) is normally 1Kw or even less. But wording on sales literature can sometimes be misleading.

If you live any where near Rutland, you can visit their showroom (by appointment only).

How much to run a 2kw heater for hours at a time?

It is easy to work out: 2 x your contracted cost of electricity per hour(probably about 9p x 2 = 18 pence)

I know how to work it out. It was meant as, it`s going to get expensive.
