Electric gates remote opening system

Morning, the electric gates we have inherited when we moved in to our home are only opened and closed via the fobs. This works fine if we are at home for us but friends need to phone our mobiles so we can open up and that’s only good if we are at home.
Been told that a SIM card can be added that then phones our mobiles giving us the option to talk and open the gates. Is this an easy add-on and what do others do for gate operation.
There is also a call-up intercom that’s at the gate that we think could be recommissioned. The information left by the previous owner said that the intercom was connected to the house phone and would sound a buzzer or different tone when someone press the button on the intercom.
Any thoughts about different options that are available would be very welcome.

I had a door bell which worked with the house phones, seems it used DECT but the problem was it had to be set to call one phone of the group, not all, so not as handy as if first seemed.

The Manchester death has caused many to get out of the electric gates business, the idea for many was you used a fob within sight of the gates, OK I know this is often not the case, my father-in-law had electric garage doors with same idea and he would close them after he had entered the house and did once trap a cat. But features were removed with many gates allowing out of sight control due to that sad death.

I would say you need to get a specialist to look at the gates, who has insurance, as the safety features now required are far more than often fitted in the past.

Yes i totally agree. Our gates have all the latest safety parts fitted ie the gate pressure pads that will open the gates if an object should become trapped etc.

That in itself means nothing, as safety devices are only of use if they are appropriate for the particular gates, they are installed correctly in the right places and configured so that the controller responds appropriately.

Again I totally agree with you Flameport.
Thanks for the links, hse . Bernardgreen, ours do have side of gate sensor strips the length of each gate that would have prevented the tragic accident upon closing.
