Hi all!

I have a question about the wiring of a 2kW electric fire. The fire is an inset fire, mounted into a fire surround, which in turn is mounted to a traditional chimney breast. There's a ring main socket adjacent the chimney breast. We planned to tap into this and install a switched fused spur to the side of the chimney breast. It appears to be standard practice to then install a socket into the recess behind the fire into which the fire is plugged. This results in a situation where two fuses (13a) are in the fire's supply wiring. The fire's flex came supplied with an inline IEC plug / socket. My question: is it acceptable to remove the 3 pin plug and wire the fire direct to the switched fused spur's outlet? This would still allow the physical disconnection of the fire via the IEC connector, remove the unnecessary (IMO) duplicate fusing, and negate the installation of a socket in the void.

Many Thanks!

Yes, of course - or not have a Fused Connector Unit (the cable is the spur; fused or not) but just a socket.

There are many choices. It is up to you and what you want.

We would like to have an easily accessible method to isolate the supply to the fire. Having just the socket inside the recess would remove this quickly accessible isolation.

Ok, but if you do not want the flex visible then you can have just a 20A switch on the wall (visible) then a socket inside the chimney - so only one fuse.

OR...

as I said, there are several possibilities.
