An NIC EIC electrician installed a temporary builder supply and fitted the electrics meter so I am paying for the electricity that I am using. Can I check that this is OK for the electrician to do this himself rather than get the power company to do it? Cheers

To a DNO supply which had no meter?

To whom?

As described it sounds almost impossible to believe.

As asked already, to whom are you paying? If you haven't set up an account with a supplier (in which case the supplier fits the meter) there's nobody to pay. Anyone can fit a meter which will register how much power is being used, but that's not the way it's done.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I've been paying my electricity bill to my power company just like everybody else. As part of my renovation the service head has been moved and my electrician moved my electricity meter to the new location to create a temporary supply for my builders to use.

my electrician moved my electricity meter
Does your energy supplier know he's interfered with their equipment?
No. The electrician advised to call the energy supplier and ask them to seal the meter and fuse. My concern was that they wont be happy about it. What would you advise? Get my electrician to remove the meter and call them to do it?

Who moved the service head?
And why wasn't the meter moved with it at the same time?
UK Power Network moved the service head. They tell me that they don't move the meter, that it is the energy company's job. I talked to my energy supplier about moving ht meter but nobody turned up to do it on three separate occasions. No explanation given! it was like banging the head against a brick wall

They may well not be happy about it. So who actually moved the service head? Was it a new cable laid in by the DNO, or did your electrician just move it a small amount on the existing cable?
Or did the DNO provide a new feed, leaving the old one in place which you now need to have removed?

P.S. Cross-posted with you. Given the circumstances then, if they try to complain about it you have pretty good ammunition to fire back at them.

UK power Networks - is that the DNO? - laid a new cable/feed and moved the service head from my doorway to the other side of the house 5m away. The electrician just moved the meter. Should i get my electrician to remove the meter and get them to do it?

Yes - Distribution Network Operator - The company which maintains the network in your area and is responsible for getting power as far as the service head in your home.

Seems odd that they didn't move the meter at the same time, as they always used to, but perhaps policies have changed in the last few years.

Not much point now it's all been moved anyway. If they kick up a fuss, I'd just throw back at them the fact that you tried three times to get them to come and do it with no appointment being kept, so felt justified in having your electrician do it.

It's been like this for a good few years where a service move now involves three separate contractors. The DNO to move the head, the MOP to move the meter and the electrical contractor to reinstate the consumers installation.

Whilst what has been done by the contractor is not what should have happened, given the circumstances I'd have probably done the same. Every effort was made to do things properly, but there comes a time when common sense has to prevail over bureaucracy.

That's because it is more efficient, and leads to lower prices and better service for consumers if the companies who make the electricity, who own the distribution infrastructure, and who own the meter and sell to consumers are all completely separate.

I'm afraid it's everything but efficient. The amount of telephone calls I made trying to sort this out and being told by one party that the problem is the other party's responsibility. As an idea it's possibly efficient. In practice it's a farce.
