I moved into a flat with a computer i had been using in 2 other properties for 5 years.
After about a week at the new flat the computer developed a fault where the monitor was getting no signal and the tower had its lights on and the hard disc was turning. Was advised it was the graphics card so i replaced it and it worked for a while then died again with same fault. Was then told it must be the motherboard but it was an old type so it could not be found. I bought a brand new computer which on the day of purchase showed signs of the old computer problems. It worked for a while then it to died with the same fault as before. Any ideas what is causing this??? Im pulling my hair out thinking how can 2 computers one being brand new can develop the same fault.
The reason i am asking is there any specific problem that would cause this
with the electrics in the flat. The new computer was only used with surge protection but same fault occured.

thanks in advance for any help with this.

Sounds to me like the problem could be the monitor instead of the computer. When you got a new computer, did you replace the monitor as well? If you did, did you re-use the old power lead? Is the monitor definitely getting power?

Have a look at your power settings in control panel (Windows) and make sure your pc isnt going into standby or hibanating set everything to always on and see what happens.

The computer is brand new i would try that but cant get anything on the screen, it clicks into standby mode instantly. It is not the monitor as it does the same with a work monitor that i took home to test.

Does anyone remember the initial request. All I was asking if anyone has an experience of 2 computers (one brand new) developing exactly the same fault, with one factor changed being the property they are plugged in at. I think it is the electrics in the property am i barking up the wrong tree??

Two computers, different monitors, same symptoms, different properties?

If so, then you have two faulty computers.

BTW, whilst the symptoms may appear to be the same, it doesn't follow that they have the same fault.

Is it not too much of a coincidence. It has nothing to do with the monitor
both monitors worked. I did all the swapping out thing to check all that. Also both worked in the new property for a while(days) then developed the same fault was advised my a PC repair person to change the Graphics card in the first computer which fixed the problem but then it developed the same fault again and at than point bought a whole new set up from pc world with surge protection and it developed the same fault almost right away. So really it has happened 3 times at the same property.
Initially it did not work in a bedroom then it worked in the lounge for a whole day then i moved it to the bedroom in the presence of an electrician to prove my point and it had the same fault and it never worked again anywhere in the house.

I didnt use one with the old computer when i first moved in because i never used one with the same computer for nearly 4 years in other properties and had no problems what so ever. That said i bought one after i put the new graphics card in the old computer and it worked for a while (days) then used the same surge protector on the new one. That doesnt mean to say there is no problems with the electrics does it. If i buy another computer with a new surge protector im not convinced it wont do the same.
I dont know if i mentioned thsi but the property is rented so the electrics are not my resposibility which is adding to my problem.

Perhaps I'm a simpleton, but the way forward seems obvious to me.

1. Diagnose fault with first computer.
2. Diagnose fault with second computer.
3. Compare faults.
4. If faults different then fix one, or other, or both, or neither.
5a. If faults the same, then do as per step 4.
5b. If fault occurs again, call in Ghost Busters.

Thanks i have tried, actually paid money to someone my computer guy at work recomended. He diagnosed first it was the graphics card which i changed on the old computer and it worked for a few days then went the same way again then he said it was the motherboard and i would have to replace it but it was too old to replace. At that point I thought ill buy a new computer and it did the same thing. I actually took the new one back and they said it was the motherboard but it was PC world so I took that with a pinch of salt. As you may have guessed im not an expert just want to use a computer in my flat in confidence that it wont break down and i dont seem to be able to get to the bottom of it with or without specialist advice. I have been using computer since i started work and im nearly 40 so i dont think im doing anything stupid, i wish it was.
