Electrolux oven hood, whats it do

I have just moved into a new house and fitted above the cooker is an Electrolux hood, model number eft635x1gb, the fan on it spins round but nothing happens, what is it supposed to do? there is no external vent for the fumes to come out, so is it just some type of filter or something? when i have taken the underneath off, i dont see any filter paper..
Is it possible to make this appliance extract fumes? and if so how do i do it? obvously i will need to make a hole in the wall, but what else do i need to do?

Should be something like that in there, which is supposed to clean the air as it re-circulates.

i suppose if i open the thing up there may be one inside it..i thought it just contained the fan, does this unit just filter the air and not extract the steam?

I think it's mostly for collecting grease in the air, rather than the steam.

If you have the chance to convert it to a vent outside hood, then do so, they are much better.
