email and word problem

i have outlook and windows xp. word is a version from 2002 i think.

i cannot open some word docs sent by email. i dont know why. i have word switched on as my email editior. however i did have to switch it off to be able to use outlook this week because of a problem with an email i received. it basically crashed my system. it wasnt spy ware or anything like that.

any ideas what has happened ?

If the word documents sent to you have come from someone using very recent software (2007 onwards), they could be in the new Microsoft Word format, which has the extension .docx rather than .doc. Unless you upgrade yourself, you are stuck. You could try getting the senders to resend in the old format - they have the option to do so in the new Office suite.
