If I have written something and then want to go back and add an emoticon, make something bold or add an image, it does not put the entry where I have placed the cursor but always at the end of the text.

It's annoying

Why does the system do this? [/b]

because you wanted to make it bold but you didnt left click and highlight the text so it didnt know what to make bold :)

If I try to make thisbold by highlighting and clicking the B it puts the [ b ] symbol after the last letter that I typed not at the beginning of the highlighted lettering. and the end bold symbol [ / b ] (without the spaces)
does not appear in the reply box at all but will be there when I post.

Edit
Which it was.

So I write this text (italic for emphasis), highlight it now [ b ] and press the Bold Button.

Wrong

The only way you can change already written text is to manually insert the [ b ] and [ / b ] symbols.

The same goes for anything else you want to do, e.g insert a url, when you press the url button it always goes at the very end of the text, not where you place the cursor.

This is what I am complaining about [/b]

Not when I do it.

I type some text in plain
and some more
and some more
and some more

then I submit it

Edited:

then I come back in edit.
I put my mouse snout to one end of the piece of text, press and hold the mouse left ear, drag the mouse to the other end, so that piece of text is highlighted
Then I left-click the louse on the b or the i or the u or the colour and the highlighted text gets B at the start and /b at the end (or whatever)

Works for me.

Have you been doing press, hold, drag?

Are you using firefox? I remember I used to have the same problem but works fine with IE.

OK, let's try your way ;)

Write some text (no "features") - rhubarb, rhubarb

Submit

Edited to make bold

Make a copy for future editing - rhubarb, rhubarb

OK your way works :!:

But what a laborious way of going about it :!:
Why do we have to submit the text before we can change its appearance.
It is also confusing to readers who see your post before you have finished with it.

Again I ask, why will the system not allow you to enter the marks where you put the cursor and not insist on always putting them at the very end of the text

as said highlight the selected text then click on the desired feature ;)

I agree. IE will allow you to highlight and mark; Firefox will not.

The highlight method works for bold, italics and other text modifiers, but it does not work for urls and img. The tags just get put at the end of the text.[/url]

[ b ] you just type them in without the white space [/ b ]

Did not know about URLs - thanks JohnD. Though you still have to use the url flags if you want to give the URL a friendly name.

I know you can type the flags , doitall, I do it all the time ;)

I was just querying why the system will always put the flag at the the end of any text, not where you put your cursor. So far no one has given me an explanation, just told me about all the work arounds.

Is this still an unresolved problem?

Is there a way to make Firefox work properly?

And by "properly" I mean in the way that people seem to expect, in the way that every other text processing software works, and the way that even the knuckle-draggers in Redmond can manage, which is that if you highlight a block of text and apply an attribute to it, you get what you want, not the attribute turned on at the very end of your document.

Is the problem with Firefox, or an incompatibility in the forum software?

Whatever it is it makes Firefox effectively unusable, and I'd like to switch to using it.....

It isn't a fault that you can't highlight text and press the bold (or any other button) and make it apply to the highlighted text because those buttons were not programmed to do that. They were designed to simply insert the tags into the text, it also (in Firefox at least) inserts to the end of the text you are typing. I do agree that it would be more useful to insert at the cursor and/or apply to highlighted text.
