I am moving into an end-terrace house. We are hoping to get a small window put in on the side / end elevation on the groundfloor; this is currently a brick wall.

I'm just wondering if this is a big job? I assume they'll have to knock out a bit of the wall to install the window?

I'm not after an exact quote but am I looking into the thousands or hundreds?

an other thing you need to keep in mind you may need planning permission if it overlooks somone elses property from a new angle [interferes with there privicy]

It’s not that big a job; the hole for the window is cut out with a rotary cutter rather than knocked out & a lintel put in the support the brickwork above. I’ve had 3 done like this &, depending on the window size, it can sometimes be done without propping. A 1m x 1m window, suitable lintel, cavity closers & internal cill shouldn’t cost more than £400. You then have to add on the labour & any propping necessary; they should be able to cut out & install the lintel in a day but should wait a few days for the mortar bed to go off before fitting the window so allow 2 days max; cost should be, say, £700 - £800 tops. In addition to this, you will need to get the window reveals boarded & plastered, say, another £100 - £150.

As Big-All has pointed out, you may need PP so check this out. The work also has to comply with Building regs so BC will want to inspect the lintel after the hole has been cut & the lintel installed but before the window is fitted; BC fee will be about £40 I think but they will tell you if you ring.
