An engine is a mechanical device that produces some form of output from a given input. Originally an engine was a mechanical device that converted force into motion. In more modern usage, the term is used to describe devices that perform mechanical work.

Not a lot of people know that.

I understand that an Engine is a piece of apparatus designed/built by an Engineer, who is an Ingenious person.

In some other European languages the spelling of Engineer (with an I) makes the link more apparent.

Charles Babbage designed a Computing Engine.

Babbage never managed to build one though, A year or so ago someone built Babbage@s computing engine, may be in the British Museum.

In italian it's ingegnere.

yep, and in French "'ingénieur," German "Ingenieur" and in Russian "Инженер" (first letter is an "ee" sound)

Software has engines, which are obviously completely non mechanical.
