Hi , we've got old floorboards which have been sanded and varnished with a walnut varnish . Since the qulaity of the floorboards is'nt the best, we were thinking of applying ''something'' on top of the varnish to make the floor shine/stand out a bit .

Would you reccomend we use to enhance the look of our floor - wax ?

Thanks

Wax ontop of a varnish/lacquered finish is a definite no no.
You could apply a maintenance product (polish) suitable for lacquered floors.

If you haven't yet applied wax polish or similar, you could posibly apply a coat of varnish on top. It would be best to test compatibility first though by simply lightly sanding an area and apply a coat of varnish. Leave for 48hrs and then test the adhesion with the edge of a ten pence piece. It should not be possible to remove the applied varnish.
If this proves successful, clean and lightly abrade the surface and apply further coats of varnish. For exercises like this I generally use Bonakemi Traffic, a 2pack water based polyurethane, which is available as a silk-matt (50%sheen).

thanks for your replies - the issue i have is that the ''effect'' of varnish wears off after a few months and hence i was wondering if putting wax on it might be better - but clearly from your feedback , it's not the best way forward.
