Hi Guys,

I've offered to help purchase and fit an EPDM roof for my neighbour for their summerhouse which has an apex roof, a plywood deck and felt. Could you please offer any suggestions on a couple of queries I have

Most of the felt appears to be nail on apart from a patch which I think their mate repaired previously. My neighbour isn't sure if they used adhesive felt for the patch but they do remember putting some bitumen type substance (upon inspection the patch does not appear to be securely attached and I can see evidence of the bitumen).

I've suggested we strip all the felt but wasn't sure if I should get extra contact/bonding adhesive for these bits or is nothing gonna work for a deck thats had bitumin on it?

The other query I had is that some of the plywood at the edges has gotten wet due to the felt failing. Would a wood hardener/wet rot treatment be suitable to shore this up for accepting the EPDM membrane or do I need to to look at cutting out and replacing some of the board? Its not a huge area about the size of my hand.

I aprpeciate your help, I'm hoping to take advantage of a bank holiday discount on one of the supplier sites.

Cheers

Thank you Catlad, I guess there comes a point where its easier to put down a new deck than to make good all the defects in the old. If I stripped the deck and it turned out the bitumen is limited to a few square metres (total area of roof is about 20) would it be possible to put something down to cover the bitumen so the EPDM will bond to it.

Like everyone I'm trying to keep the costs down :) but if theres no workaround then a new deck it is.

Cheers
