Estimating Project Timeframes

I don't know how many are involved with estimating for future jobs.
I'm hopeless and vastly over estimate my and others ability, and fail to see all the incidentals invariably required.
I usually see jobs or projects in terms of quick and easy, or more involved over a longer timeframe, requiring a strategical view for the future.

A good learning tool I've developed over time is to keep a diary.
Just a few simple notes of what's been achieved today.
And an ambition for what I hope will be achieved tomorrow.
I find it helps to give me a perspective on what can be achieved for future projects.
